The Modern Railroad Edward Hungerford 9781146089340 Books Reviews

My son is a big model train buff, he liked it very much.
Made a very good gift for him.
by modern they mean 19th century, but
its a good snapshot of the operations then.
Interesting Research
Modern here means about 1910. I found it a thoroughly interesting description of how a railroad was run at that time. Unfortunately, it did not include the illustrations of the original although it did have all the captions. It was interesting nevertheless.
You think crony capitalism is new? Evidently, big business has been feeding at the Government trough since the very founding of this country. What struck me was the greed that started even as the revolutionary war ended. This is history that everyone who cares about free enterprise needs to read. The graft and corruption started with the digging of the first canals and the railroads imitated this and played along.
An English railroad expert surveys the history and practice of railroading in America just before the roof collapses. The book is published in 1910, two years after sales of the Model T begin. The book sketches the history and goes into considerable detail about operations at the turn of the twentieth century. The author loves the railroads but he doesn't turn a blind eye to everything. It is a great source if you find you need (or just want) details about old railroads. Myself, I think it improves my understanding of American history.
The technology and the romance are not the foci here - it is the organization of the early 20th century corporations that ran the railroads. As I work in a very safety-conscious infrastructure, it was a illuminating to see the roots of how modern corporations are organized and run, at least on a operational and marketing level.

It does sometimes read as an Horatio Alger booster book - a way to encourage and guide the aspirant railroad businessman. It is remarkably free of modern cynicism but gets the message across that business is to make money by serving and that safety is in everyone's interest.

It is an enjoyable read - I've read it twice!
The "Modern" in the title refers to the time the book was written 1911. It does have a reasonable coverage of history up to that time. The writing style is very flowery, which I associate with early 1900s' writing.
The emphasis is on people, not hardware. It covers everyone from gandy dancers and clerks to upper management. Very little coverage of equipment.
The book was probably scanned and digitized. If so, it was done very well. I found none of the usual "d" rather than "c l" or "m" for "r n," etc. Unfortunately, although the picture captions are included, the pictures themselves are not.
All in all, an unusual and interesting book.
